Toothache at Christmas: what to do, what to avoid, and when to call us
Toothache Over the Christmas Period
There is nothing worse than toothache at the very time you want to relax, enjoy your food and make the most of the festive season. Dental problems have a habit of flaring up just when we least need them, which is why a little preparation can go a long way.
Small aches can become big problems
Those little twinges you notice in December can quickly turn into something more uncomfortable, especially when the dentist is closed. This is why we encourage patients to attend their check ups before Christmas rather than postponing them until the new year. A simple half hour appointment could prevent a much bigger issue over the holidays.
We reserve emergency appointments every day for anyone in pain, and if you simply want something checked for peace of mind, we are always happy to help.
Festive tips to protect your teeth
Christmas treats are everywhere, so here are a few simple tips to reduce the risk of toothache.
- Choose your sweet treats with care. It is better to enjoy dessert straight after your meal rather than snacking on chocolates later on. This creates one longer acid exposure rather than two separate ones.
• Remember alcoholic drinks contain sugar, so sip water alongside them. It helps wash away sugar and will be kinder to you the next morning.
• Try to avoid toffees and chewy sweets. They are one of the most common causes of festive dental emergencies.
What to do if pain starts
Some issues, such as wisdom tooth flare ups, can happen without warning. It is helpful to keep painkillers at home over Christmas. Warm salt water rinses can also soothe sore areas, particularly around wisdom teeth or recent tooth extractions, and help keep the area clean.
When to seek help
No one wants to visit the dentist during the festivities, but sometimes it is necessary. Please contact us if you notice facial swelling or pain that keeps you awake at night. Although the practice will be closed, clinicians and nurses will be on call from 9am to 1pm to offer advice, and if needed, open the surgery to see you. Your comfort and safety remain our priority.
Specific situations
- Wisdom tooth pain: keep the area as clean as possible and use warm salt water rinses. Over the counter painkillers and numbing gels such as Bonjela can offer relief.
• Brace discomfort: have orthodontic wax on hand and use it on any wires that begin to rub.
• Crowns that have come off: these are often fine for a few days as long as the area is kept clean. If sensitivity occurs, try using a sensitive toothpaste and apply a small amount directly to the tooth like a cream.
If you need any further guidance over the Christmas period, please contact the practice. We are here to support you.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and let us know if you need us!
